Billing For Long-Overdue, Non-Returned or Damaged ItemsBrowsing Media items (such as CDs and DVDs) not returned after 17 days are billed as "lost". Please keep in mind that Browsing Media items are not renewable. Regularly circulating items not returned after 27 days are billed as "lost". When an item is billed, users are charged a default replacement cost (currently $40.00 for books and $50.00 for media items) or more for items of higher value. Additionally, a non-refundable $8.00 processing fee is charged for each billed item. Once billed items are returned, the replacement charges are removed, but the non-refundable processing charges are not. Users are also subject to charges for items damaged while in their care. Payments must be made to the Controller's Office only. Users should retain all receipts. Appeal of ChargesIf you think the library has made an error or if you have a special situation that made it difficult for you to return or renew materials on time, you may file an appeal. Charges may be upheld, reduced or cancelled. Appeals must be filed within six months of billing. Please note: Appeals based on not knowing the library rules or the amount of fines, claiming your need was greater than another's, being too busy, being out of town, uncertainty about the due date, failing to receive an overdue notice, or failing to read your e-mail are generally not regarded as valid reasons for cancelling or reducing library charges.
