Each URL contains a top level domain name, usually three letters. Here are some common top level domains:

• .com    commercial organizations--often selling something
• .edu    U.S. higher education (colleges and universities)
• .gov    U.S. federal, state, or local governments

• .net    network service provider
• .org    organization, generally non-profit
